Betsy & Ryan Colwell Mentorship Scholarships for Women in Thoracic Surgery

The Betsy & Ryan Colwell Mentorship Scholarships for Women in Thoracic Surgery were established with the aim of helping early career female cardiothoracic surgeons make connections and establish mentor relationships within the specialty. Thanks to the generosity of Drs. Betsy & Ryan Colwell, the scholarships provide support for attendance at the Women in Thoracic Surgery (WTS) Annual Conference and a pairing with a more senior surgeon mentor throughout the event. Each scholarship covers the cost of conference registration, three nights lodging in a host hotel, and a stipend to cover travel expenses associated with conference attendance. Two awards will be issued each year beginning in 2025.

Purpose

As an underrepresented group in the cardiothoracic surgery specialty, female surgeons can thrive when provided the opportunity to network with and gain mentorship from other surgeons who recognize the unique challenges that women can face as they pursue this challenging career. The Betsy & Ryan Colwell Mentorship Scholarships for Women in Thoracic Surgery were established with the aim of helping female cardiothoracic surgeons make connections and establish mentor relationships within the specialty.

This award provides two annual scholarships for female early-career cardiothoracic surgeons or trainees to attend the Women in Thoracic Surgery (WTS) Annual Conference, and to be paired with a more senior surgeon mentor throughout the conference. We anticipate that a lasting relationship will form between mentor and mentee.
